phosphate balanced cat food recipes; cat kidney alternatives to Hills Dog food;

I have two cats. Bubba 15 yrs 10lbs and Buzz 10 yrs 12 lbs. Last week Buzz had a urine blockage (grit) and was take to the vet for a catheter. He is home now. This was his first occurence. No health issues up to this point Dr recommended a prescription diet, Hills s/d now, then c/d for maintenance. This last year I have had both kitties on a grain free diet (Wellness Core, dry and canned-do you know anything about this brand?) Previous to the change they had always been on Hills t/d, but vomited several times a day. Changing to grain free, all but eliminated the vomiting, and the older kitty seems more energetic. Now back on Hills, started vomiting again. Do you think by changing to the grain free diet that it caused the kidney stones? What is the necessary ingredient to prevent more stones? (an added note, Bubba had lost 2-3 lbs over the last year & was diagnosed with hypothyroidism by a previous vet who prescribed a pill. After one pill, he became lethargic. That is when I investigated the grain free diet. Also giving Bubba Resthyro supp in his food for for the hypothyroid. I did not get the Resthyro from a vet, purchased on-line by Pet Wellbeing.) Up until now, before Buzz urinary issue, both kitties have been active and playful. Since Monday, and starting the Hills diet, both seem less playful. Hi Monica - You can't use Wellness Core or any other dog food for your baby - Sorry - there are only 3 foods for Canines with stones and struvites- They are Hill's Rx, and 2 others - Royal Canin and Purina ----All Awful foods;
You need to home cook or use the foods that I just listed.
You mentioned your dog vomits on the Hill's Rx - you need to home cook - sorry .
I don't see you have any choices for your dog except home-cooking.

Hi Monica, The Wellness food is a great brand but can cause problems in older cats.
It's has very rich ingredients and can be hard to break down.
I would go to home-cooking and put the Hill's out as a snack only -

Supplements and good home Cooking will do the trick:
Home-cooking is the best you can do..

Show your VET the Recipe... ( you can educate him/her) on proper feeding with home-made special diets:

As for food :

here are some recipes for cats with urinary problems/  helps to keep away the UTIs and stones.

ALTERNATIVE to  Hill's RX food ; home cooking for cats with crystals ; stones; feline UTI;

You need a low protein and low phosphorus food.

A low-grain food for UTI and struvite control in cats:  



WE have had great luck with this diet:

Cats with Kidney Problems
( Stops The UTI and stones)


4 parts carbohydrate:   
Pureed barley flakes -  ( barley flakes can be found in the baby food area)

2 parts protein:   
Lightly broiled chicken or beef ** (you can also use baby food chicken )
You can use a Dash of Olive oil with the beef

1 part vegetable:
Chopped alfalfa sprouts are best.  CARROT Juice is a great item to try - Just 1/8 cup
CATS are not too fond of veggies...
MUST be pureed to digest  *( YOU can skip this if your cat doesn't like the veggies)- just try the carrot juice.  

2 teaspoons soft butter

Cook at 350 for 15-20 minutes .

 
I cook all my meats.
