Royal Canin SO Cat Food vs. Store Bought

Question
QUESTION: Hello..

My 13YO cat had surgery a couple years ago for bladder stones and the vet put her on Royal Canin SO for Urinary Tract health. She normally would eat the dry food version but now only wants the "morsels in gravy."  We normally gave her dry in the morning and the wet food in the evening.  The vet-provided cat food has worked, but is relatively expensive.  Are there commercially available urinary tract cat foods that work as well?

Thanks for your help..

Rick

ANSWER: Cat with bladder stones;  Special diet for cats with kidney stones;
Hi Rick - The only other choices besides the Royal Canin or the Hills RX is to home cook for your cat.  I have some easy recipes - they are made just for cats with this kind of problem.
Are you ready to home cook?  Lower cost but some cooking to be done on your part.
Let me know if you want the recipes?

BEST wishes

QUESTION: Hi Marie,

Thank you kindly for getting back to me so quickly.  Sure, I don't mind cooking.  It may give her some variety, and she always pesters me for "people food" when I'm cooking it anyway (ground beef, fish, chicken, and turkey).  :-)

How could you get the recipes to me?

Rick

P.S. As you seem familiar with these foods, we had been feeding her successfully in the past all 3 types of Royal Canin (dry, can, and morsels in a pouch).  Now, she suddenly is finicky and only likes the pouch food.  Any thoughts?  The dry was always convenient when we had to leave her alone for a few days.

Answer
The Wet food or the pounch foods helps the cat to get more fluids.  She may know she needs fluids and wants the wet food for that reason.  Dry food is not very good for cats with kidney stones.  If you use dry you should always add ( drizzle) some water on top of the dry.

Here are the recipes for cats with UTIs and stones:
Give them a try:

Diet for the Cat with Kidney Problems

4 parts carbohydrate:

Pureed barley flakes and /or
baby food creamed corn

2 parts protein:
( don't do an egg every day - 3-4 x per week is fine for eggs )******
Lightly broiled chicken or beef or cooked egg  ( ground chicken / ground lean beef)
or
baby food chicken

1 part vegetable:
OPTIONAL  - cats don't need veggies...

Chopped of finely grated raw vegetable or vegetable
juice-carrots, zucchini, and alfalfa sprouts are best  ( NO onions.....)

1/2 to 1 full teaspoon per day of NuVET Plus Feline vitamins

2 teaspoons soft butter

This is easy to make - You can cook up for days of meats and leave in the refrigerator.
Most cats do like the GERBER baby food chicken...... ( i know , odd) - try to buy in ON-SALE .

You can still offer the Royal Canin pouch every other day or every third day....
HOME cooking is the best for your cat.
You can also offer some cat treats - just a few per day to keep the teeth clean.
I believe Greenies makes a cat treat

To order the NuVET Feline vitamins go here:  Holistic and not in the stores:
Use order code 81098 and ask for the 15% off discount Program
1-800-474-7044

Make sure you use the NuVET vitamins to balance out her feeding ....
Don't do too much turkey or fish....( mainly leaner beefs and chicken )

Good luck
