Going nuts over cat food!

Question
Hello Marie, we have since adopted a 6 month old kitten that showed up at our back property almost 3 weeks ago.  He's now almost 6 1/2 lbs., was 5 1/2 lbs. 2-3 weeks ago.

We took him to the vet on early March for check up and needles.  He'll have the last ones done plus neutering late March.  She gave me worm medicine to give him as well.  Perhaps you don't need to know all of this.

Anyway, I've been checking and checking AND checking the internet re: proper food, dry vs. wet, etc. etc.  We are in Southern Ontario Canada and I imagine get many of the same products as the States.

All I want is a good diet that won't give him future problems and make him sick of course.  We can't afford the really expensive food in the quantities that you're supposed to feed as far as canned food goes.  We also have over 30 rescue bunnies as house pets, a dog, many many fish tanks and ducks out back.  We're in a rural area and figure this kitty was dumped.

We love 'Cupid' as he is soooo friendly, affectionate, well-mannered, never has messed outside of his litterbox, etc.  He seems to have taken to us right away and feels like he's been here for his whole life!  He lives in the recroom as my husband works down there and all of our tanks are down there too so he has lots of attention and entertainment.  Our bunnies and dog live upstairs.

Finally, my concern:  I've read the worst canned food is better than the best dry food, most canned foods at Petsmart, Wal-Mart, and other chain stores are garbage and if you don't feed your cat products like Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Halo, By Nature, and other wholistic foods then you shouldn't even own a cat (last part not really true, but that's how you're made to feel).

My aunt had 2 cats ages and ages ago that lived to be 22 yrs. old and I never heard of diabetes, urinary tract problems, etc. etc. and I'm sure there was never even 'premium' type foods then.

Again, because of our many animals, we need a product that is easily attainable, affordable and healthy for Cupid.  Any ideas?  Again, I hope certain ones you mention, isn't only sold in the States.

Thank you and sorry for all the rambling!

Paula

Answer
Hi Paula and family:  Boy - Cupid is lucky to have you!!!
Just remember Water is the Key for a cat's health.
MOST cats don't like to drink water.

Wet canned food should be fed daily along with dry kibble food.

Here is the food I refer to often:  YOU can't get it in your area:
They have a good Video and it explains ingredients-  It's worth watching:
SEE here:
Try to find something in your country with the same ingredients:

Next-
A Good Probiotic -  Mix into the Wet canned food daily for 90 days.
This will help his gut but also the immune system.
You can order here or look at your local FEED and Seed stores
