Question
QUESTION: Hi Ms Peppers,
I have a ~3 year old male cat.  A while back, he had a problem with sediment collecting in his bladder, and I was told to keep him on wet food to ensure that he stayed hydrated.  I chose Friskies shredded beef because he loved the flavor and texture (and I can't stand the smell of fish flavored cat food).
I just recently figured out that he's allergic to it!  He's always hacked and coughed a lot, but I only just now figured out that it's got to do with his food.  I grabbed a bunch of different brands from the grocery store.  Some caused coughing, some didn't.  One that didn't, and that he seemed to enjoy, was the Home 360 brand Mixed Grill.  Sure it's got a lot of ingredients in it, but so do all of them.  And I can't really afford some kind of special diet food.  Is it bad to feed him generic cat food?

ANSWER: Hi Stephanie,  I can give you a recipe for cats with urinary problems or stones.
You mentioned sediment?  Was there many UTIs?  Is your cat getting chronic UTIs?
I can help with some recipes for you to HOME-cook.
Let me know if you want them?

WET food is the best for cats.  Dry is fine for a snack on the side.

QUESTION: Hi Ms Peppers,
No, he has never had a UTI that I know of.  Basically what happened is that he didn't pee for a few days, and then once I picked him up as I normally do and he cried out in pain and urinated all over himself.  The vet said that he just had a tendency to keep sediment in his bladder and the best thing to do was ensure he was hydrated by feeding him wet food, which I've been doing ever since.  He's never had a problem since then.
The coughing is unrelated.  He's spent the night at the vet's for various reasons (he's not in bad health or anything, but you know... got fixed, tried to eat a rubber ball once, etc) and never coughed enough to make the vets take notice.  But I did recently notice that it happens after I feed him, and that changing brands seemed to help.
I would love to know what you can make at home for cats with urinary problems.  Are we talking about regular meals or treats?  Also, I didn't mention that my cat has a sister- she doesn't have the same problem.  Would his special food be good for her too?
Thank you,
Stephanie

Feline Hash  Recipe - THIS will Be GREAT for both of your cats!!!
Give it a try:

2 cups regular ground hamburger  *( please lightly cook the meats)-
1 cup cooked brown rice
10 tablespoons alfalfa sprouts
1 1/4 cup creamed cottage cheese ( small curd)

Combine all and feed at room temperature
YUM YUM
( cats can eat veggies but they don't need them....)  You can just stick to the alfalfa sprouts... as they seem to like them.

( you can do a little chicken breast - rather than the ground hamburger)  Mix and Match a bit.

Cats seem to like cooked zucchini, too  ( small bites almost grated)
