19 year old with urinary problems...

Question
I recently went through a bout with urinating blood. Dr. says is an infection and thank God, my girl has responded to antibiotics.  About 10 years ago she taught herself to stand on her hind legs to coerce me into giving her treats and now I don't know what is safe for her.  She is on both dry and wet food designed for urinary Problems...Purina NF/Dry and Royal Canin LP.  Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Juanita,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I was out of town for a few days.

Does your kitty have kidney problems, as in maybe her BUN, Creatinine, Amylase, Calcium, PCV or HCT, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Sodium are out of whack? Not all of them have to be "out of whack," but BUN and Creatinine would be 2 important ones. It sounds like your vet has diagnosed her with Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) going by the foods that he has you feeding her because they are lower protein.

Could you please confirm if your vet has diagnosed her with CRF, please?

Also, would you please post the lab results (with reference ranges because not all vets use the same lab companies, or they may have been done in-house)? If you don't have them, your vet should provide them upon request.

Once I have the answers to the above questions I can help you further because different diseases or illnesses require a different approach when it comes to food.

Just waiting on your response. :) Hugs to you and your sweet girl (BTW, what is her name?),

Jules
