Cat Safety

Hello,

I have a question about cat safety. My friend Kate and I are moving in together in July. She's got a small dog and I have a cat. Kate really wants to install a doggy door so her dog can go out and pee when he needs to - as we'll both be in school. She's concerned about my cat's safety as well, and has said that there are lots of "Secure" doggy doors that only unlock when the dog is in front of it, and what naught. Are those as safe as they sound? How do you feel about doggy doors in a cat house hold?

This site sells items like the one you might need. It is based in the UK but I am sure that there are plenty of companies selling this type of item around the world.

Now because of the way it works it only lets the wearer of the key on their collar in and out. Cats do not usually, I will emphasis usually, follow dogs through obstacles like swinging doors so they would not be right behind the dog. They would let the dog clear the hazard then follow, but no key no swinging door. So in theory this is ideal.

As long as the door works correctly the doggy door is OK. But you need to ensure it is well maintained. And of course can you guarantee the dog will actually use the door to go out for the toilet?
Some dogs just use these doors to access the outside for a run.

So my feeling is it seems ok a long as the dog is trained to use it and it is well maintained.
