Question
QUESTION: Hi,

My female cat is in heat now and I'm trying to mate her with my male cat. The female did have a litter before, but its the first time for my male. When he tries to mount her, he doesn't knows what to do. I tried helping him by directing the penis towards the female's vagina, but I noticed his penis is not erected, or it erects for a second and then shrinks back again. I think he did penetrate for like a second, but did not ejaculate.
Is this normal? how can I help my male mate correctly?

Please any advice would help!

Thanks

PS. My male is a bit shorter than my female. Could this be a problem?

ANSWER: Dear Blaze

I would guess from what yu say that your boy is very young so he just needs some practice.  The other thing to remember with a young boy is that he is still growing so time will no doubt sort out both issues for him.

You know what they say - practice makes perfect. :-)

QUESTION: Thanks for replying!
he is about 15 months old..always had been small sized since he was a kitten.. my female had always been somewhat larger.. she weighs also more than him.. she's about 18 months old..
Do you think I should leave them 24/7 together while the female is in heat? I have been trying mating session so that I am able to observe, once I feel the female is getting frustrated I immediately seperate them and then try again later.

Answer
I still think that time will resolve the problems.  I have known some boys not start working until they are 2-3 years old.

I'm not sure that leaving them together 24/7 will solve the matter as he may well harrass the girl so that any relationship breaks down.

It may be that if you want to mate your girl now you will need to use another stud and wait for your boy to grow a little.  Alternatively you may just have to continue encouraging him into the right position.

Its very difficult to advise on this from such a distance and it would be good if you could find a breeder much closer to you that can observe the problem in action.
