male cat fights with female

Question
Hi,

I recently bought a male persian 1yr and 8 months old for breeding purposes. He is such a sweet and very well behaved boy; He has never had a chance to breed and is eager to do so .. The problem is that my females are currently off heat since the weather is cold, and he seems to want to force the females to breed with him. He would get into an aggressive fight with one of my females every time he has a chance to do so. First he would try to mount her, but she refuses which leads to an extreme "paw fight" .. I'm not sure if he is actually trying to be aggressive as I never saw him hiss or anything at the females, but the females do become extremely defensive and quite scared of him ..He would just run behind them as fast as he could clawing them and they would run away hissing and spitting at him clawing him back .. (He initiates the attack, or maybe he's just playing rough??, not sure)
I am worried that even when the females come into heat he would still act this way, which will make it extremely difficult for me to breed him without harming my females or himself. I've had several whole males before and non of them ever tried to force a female to breed.. a single hiss from a female would make them back off..but my new boy does not like to take no for an answer, apparently ..!!!
I am separating him from my females now.

Any advice? Do you think this behavior would go away once he has a chance to breed?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Blaze

Yes I think you have done the best thing in separating the boy for now.  You do not say if your girls are experienced breeding queens.  If they are they will change their attitude towards the boy once they are in season and your boy will know they smell differently and may well act differently though some boys do tend to just jump on the girls and have their wicked way.

He is very much a novice adolescent and has to learn the right way.  If your girls are not experienced breeders then I would suggest you find a girl who has had a lot of experience for him to mate the first time so that she can help to teach him.  I suspect at the moment he is just hoping to practice his technique and from the sound of it has a little way to go.  Some boys though are best not kept with the girls except for breeding otherwise the girls can get fed up of this sort of behaviour.
