Question

cat claw
This is a question about grooming. One of my cats is polydactyl. She has a normal sized "thumb" next to her regular toes, but in between her thumb and her normal toes is an extra tiny toe, which is big enough to have a claw. Today she was laying on my bed and washing her feet, when I heard her biting on something, and when I looked, I saw that the claw on the tiny toe had grown so much that it's actually curling back around, kind of like a ram horn (at first I thought it had actually curled right into her paw, but luckily that's not the case). I guess I hadn't noticed before because she's a longhair, and it was able to get that long because that tiny extra toe doesn't touch anything when she scratches on her post (although the same toe on the other foot was fine).

So anyway, I guess I need to trim it, and I just wanted some advice, because I've never had to trim the cats' nails before, and I know you're only supposed to trim so far back because there's tissue growing in part of the claw, but I wasn't sure if, the longer the nail gets, the further the tissue grows as well. I don't know if you've come across something like this before, but what do you think?

Thanks!
Rachel

Answer
Hi Rachel--
That is actually one that at this point in time you may want to have your vet look at.....I would suggest (if you want to work on it for a while) taking an emery board and filing on it every day---just work your way back...it is so malformed, that I wouldn't even begin to be able to guess where to clip it at without cutting into the quick.  If you file it back a bit every day, eventually the quick will retract and you should be able to get it to a 'normal' length where you can trim it with regular nail clippers.....

Hope this helps a bit.
