Seasonal allergies

Question
I have a Yorkie/shi tzu weighing 5-6kg and live in the UK.

Each August, my dog itches excessively. She doesn't have fleas.

My vet keeps prescribing prednisolone, but I'd rather she have antihistamine. Piriton has worked for her before, but I keep cetirizine 10mg tablets in for myself. Can I give her this? If I can, what would be the maximum safe dose?

Answer
I am not familar with either of those medications as we do not use them in the US.

I usually recommend Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) for allergies at a dose of 1 mg per pound three times a day. Or you can give Chlorphinaramine 2 mg three times a day.

Also, you should add fish oil to her diet as the Omega 3 Fatty Acids are good for the skin and reducing inflammation and itching.
