Older dog middle ear syndrome

Question
Thinking my dog had a stroke yesterday since he couldn't stand or do much of anything, he went to the vet this morning to be euthanized. I gave a complete history of his problems since last being seen and what led up to this event, and the doctor told me he is 99% convinced he has middle ear syndrome, or an infection, that is quite treatable. Barring any other information from lab tests, he will confirm that tomorrow, believes I can pick him up and bring him home in 2-3 days and that he should lead a productive life for another couple or three years. All that said, what is the treatment to "get him back on his feet," literally. What more can you tell me about this? I'm just looking for further information until I can talk with the vet again.
Thank you very much!

Answer
You have given me very scant information, but middle ear disease is treated by opening the eardrum and cleaning out the middle ear.  Then the middle ear is infused with antibiotics to treat the infection.  MAny dogs require steroid therapy to keep the inflammation in the middle ear minimized.  He may also need systemic antibiotics for a few weeks.
