Neutering an older dog

Question
Hi, I have a 7yr old Great Dane that is in perfect health.  Our Breeder recommended we never neutor him.  She explained that she has experienced surgical complications from neutored Danes in the past and their non-aggressive demeanors do not warrant neutoring.  The problem is that every time we take him to the Vet, they STRONGLY recommend neutoring.  My question is...how prevelant is prostate cancer?  I think Vets push neutoring more b/c of pet overpopulation instead of a real threat of cancer...?  What are the risks in neutoring an older dog?  What if it changes his personality?  Why should we do it now?  Thanks!

Answer
Neutering is a good thing OK?  It lessens agression and YES it does lower prostate problems in older male dogs. It is an issue to address.

Danes, being deep chested are a bit of an anesthetic risk, but with a great veterinary team, you should have no problems.

If you had not bred him etc.. he should of been neutered.

Good luck
