Question
i live in halls of residence and the fire alarm is frequently going off and i just wanted to know if this would affect my hamster's temprament?
We have only had him for a week and we have been unable to pick him up as he always goes to bite you. We have bought some gloves to try and pick him up because we are scared he will bite us and we will throw him!
Also we have noticed that only recently he has started to have wetness around his rear end, which sometimes has excrement stuck to it is this something serious?
Also we have all had colds and three of us have tried to pick him up and have more than likely breathed on him could this be the cause of some of his aggression?
thank you for taking the time to read this i will await your reply xx

Answer
Hi Claire!  The alarms may cause your hamster to become nervous.  It takes a few weeks for a hamster to adjust to his owners.  Keep handling him as much as possible and he will eventually learn to trust you and enjoy your company.
The wetness around his rear end would be "Wet Tail"...this is a hamster ailment and is treated with drops that you can purchase at any pet store.
Colds can only be contracted by birds.  Your hamster will be just fine!
I hope this helps,
Hilary
