Question
Dear Dr. ELLEN
Hello! My names is James, and I raise one pet(Maltese)with white hair.

Briefly say, what my pet's problem is he can not control the place where he should take a leak or not. I have always been disciplined him to take a leak at a designated place by repeatly saying you should make pee here not there... However, it is fruitless endeavour, he can not control. I try him not to make pee just wherever he wants by reminding him of no feeding or something like that. But I found out what problem he has.
Whenever he left home alone, he just take a leak, sometimes I can not even find the place. Maybe he feel lonely or something obsessed behavior of left alone or he might want to designate the area of his as a kind of self- defence from another enemies...(I red this from a book.)
Finally, I found the way that making him not to leak a pee. What I got is testicle remove surgery. I do not know exact the medical terms but I got that information from internet. But as you think, this way is too cruel for any pet to do surgery. As a sicentifically valid, that surgery making the pet not to feel designate the area of his as a instinct behavior.
It is too cruel, I dont even want to mention that again.
What should I do for my pet?
Please give me some tips.
Sincerely ,
James Choi

Answer
Hi there,

First of all let me clarify I am not a DR, I am a licensed veterinary technician.

If you are not going to neuter him ( and it is CORRECT to do so if you are not going to breed him) then you are going to deal with a male dog marking his territory and you are going to have to live with that nasty behavior.

Take him to the vet for an exam and a talk and to be sure he does not have a urinary tract infection.
