Why might are dog be vomiting?

Question
Hello Jennifer!

We are use to our 2yr old Sheltie/Pommerening vomiting every now and then (once in a 3mo period) after eating too fast.

But today, we awoke to the sounds of her trying to vomit - in what was a very gutteral, loud, and physically taxing event.

The first time anything came out it was yellowish and watery, and the second time it looked like oatmeal (heavier consistency, white in color).

She eats "Prescription Diet ID" petfood, gets bacon treats and bones as well - outside of that, nothing strange to eat.

Jennifer, if you might me able to tell us what's making her vomit, we'd really appreciate it! We're just worried about our very important member of the family.  :)

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Answer
There are literally 101 reasons why she could be vomiting.  If she is already eating I/D, then I would assume she has a sensitive stomach to begin with.  I would discontinue the bacon treats as she could have an allergy to them, and even the bones she gets could be causing digestive upset.   Irritable or inflammatory bowel disease can often be reduced with either prescription diet I/D fed alone (i.e. no treats) or a hypoallergenice diet such as IVD Venison, Duck or Rabbit food.  If the vomiting is continuing and you have eliminated the treats, then I would recommend blood work to check kidney, liver and pancreas function as well as white blood counts (look for infection) and electrolytes (rule out Addison's Disease).  If she hasn't had a stool sample checked, then take one to the vet to rule out intestinal parasites which could be another cause of upset vomiting.
