Question
My 4 month old puppy has been diagnosed with parvo and distemper. she can't hold anything down and won't drink. she is on medication and home IV's. can she survive? She has lost alot of weight.

Answer
I am sorry to hear this Christina.
A puppy that has been double slammed with parvo AND distemper is pretty rare. Was there a canine distemper test done on her to diagnose this?
Most puppies can survive parvo, but distemper can cause life-long neurological problems with a dog.
They tend to have really bad adult teeth, the shakes, and other impairments that don't go away.
I don't want to upset you but the chances are not good for a dog with both of these diseases.
However, in the 30 years I practiced I never once saw a puppy with both.
I am wondering (barring the tests) why the vet would think the puppy had them both.
Keep fighting for her and keep treating her. She may only have parvo and can fight that if she has had at least one vaccination.
Some survive even if they haven't had any- but breed plays a part in that too. Some dogs are more prone to parvo and don't do as well.
But supportive care is the most important thing.
I am surprised they released her to go home.
Please let me know if she survives. I will be praying for her.
