fast breathing

3 yr. old female Maine Coon. All shots and regular vet visits since birth. Recent checkup 7 days ago - all tests OK except she weighs 16 lbs. and is about 3 lbs. over weight. Maine Coon cats are normally big. However, the past 3 days her heart beat appears rapid even at rest but shows no sign of discomfort or change in behavior. Everything normal except for the rapid heart beat. No panting and mouth remains closed. Any reason to be concerned?

Why do you think her heart is beating rapidly?  If your veterinarian has cleared her as a healthy cat, then she should be healthy with a healthy heartrate.  

There are several reasons why cats would have a rapid heartrate. One is an overactive thyroid, not common in a cat under ten years of age.  The fact that she is overweight indicates that she most likely not hypothyroid.  

Do you smoke?  Often cats will react to cigarette and cigar smoke.  Signs such as coughing, increased breathing, sneezing can indicate a reacting to secondhand smoke.

If you feel as though her heartrate is increased, see your veterinarian again.  He/she can help you to determine which treatment is right for your kitty.
