Dachshund Skin Condition

Question
My 4 year old male dauchshund has is being treated with prednisone and clavamox for his skin problem.  At first I noticed the belly beginning to darken, then itching and biting and scratching. Now he has scabs and some hair loss and when the scabs comes off there is only raw skin. Today I found a postule on his belly filled with yellow stuff on belly. I am in tears with worry that my vet may not know what to do and I may need a specialist. His ears are also red on the inside with a small amount of bleeding if touched. He is constantly flopping his ears back and forth.  He has seizures and takes zonasimide 100 mg twice a day. My vet says give the meds some time but it has been five days and he is not better. He was running a low grade fever when we went to the vet 5 days ago. He has lots of scabs on his hind quarters and legs and red rash on his belly and in his ears.
please advise. Sharon Reid

Answer
IT does take some time for the infection to go away.  Depending on the dose of prednisone, the itching should subside quickly. We normally start out with a high dose and taper it down. You should also be using an antibacterial shampoo with either chlorhexidine or benzoyl peroxide to treat the infection from outside.
