Dog throwing up...

Question
I have a 5 year old Boxer who has always had digestion problems. We recently bought him his usual food but it is a new bag of food (Rachel Ray dog food). He has been throwing up for four days now and he is begging for food but once we feed him he throws up. We feed him twice a day and have not been feeding him his dog food. We've made him scrambled eggs for dinner last night. And scrambled eggs with mixed fruit (a very little) and a small multigrain waffle. We did a similar dinner but he seems ravenous. Do you have any suggestions of how to feed him without feeding him the dog food?

Answer
Any dog that has been vomiting for 4 days needs to see a vet. This can become a deadly serious problem very quickly. Dogs that vomit constantly either are blocked from eating something they cannot pass through the small intestine, or they are headed for pancreatitis, or they have gastritis.

Rachel Ray food is a fad food and is NOT trial fed so it has no track record of sustaining any dog at any life stage for the life of the dog. They also use open formulation which means they go in with other cheap dog food companies and buy whatever is cheapest on the docks that day to make their dog food with (offal from slaugher houses to sheep's heads from Australia- I kid you not).

What this does is it makes the food that you think is consistent from bag to bag like a brand new food- and when you feed a food like that it causes major digestive upsets to dogs, resulting in vomiting and/or diarrhea.

In the absence of stool or diarrhea I would venture this dog to have a possible obstruction. That means you need to get him into the vets pronto.

Think about what he plays with and then you will know if this is a possibility. Does he eat/chew on bark, twigs, little balls, etc? Socks, towels, you name it will cause this.

Once it is has been established whether or not he has an obstruction the next step is to treat this vomiting and then after that to get him onto a decent food with a track record of wellness for dogs. We recommend and feed Science Diet because it is the ONLY food left that keeps its food consistent with a closed formulation and doesn't buy any food from the docks ever. They have over 50 yrs of trial feeding to show that their food will sustain and dog for life in really great if not perfect health. I have proven it with my own pets, as has the vet here. More vets feed their own pets this food for a reason and it isn't money!

It is the best food to feed dogs with sensitive stomachs and they even have a formula just for that. But first things first- Call the vet today and get him in tomorrow!!
