Question
Hello Jana! I realize you can't diagnose my baby's symptoms, but I am hoping you can give me some ideas of what could be wrong so we can be prepared of what the vet might say...He is a healthy 2 y/o male, neutered Shih Tzu. As of this afternoon, he began to change in behavior...he would sit down on his walks, as if he didn't want to continue, (he loves his walks), refused to eat dinner, is trembling slightly in lower extremities, continues to lick his tongue out, appears to not be able to jump up on couch. He still urinated and had 2 bowel movements today, but his demeanor is frightening. Could you please give us any illnesses his symptoms can relate to? We are taking him to the vet, we just want to be prepared for what we might hear...thank you for taking my question.

Answer
When small, healthy dogs act this way usually it is because they have a strained muscle or bump and they are scared and in pain.
They won't tell you where it is but the vet will find it. Usually it's the back (sacrum) or a knee cap going out (luxating patella) or something of that nature. The symptoms you are describing are very typical for a dog that has strained something of that nature.
95% of the time it is nothing serious. When you see the vet just listen and be relaxed- he will be fine.
Good for you for neutering him by the way. Thank you!
