Vomiting and Lethargy in our 8 year old dog.

Question
Hello,

Our normally healthy and active Bichon threw up the other day (looks like he rummaged through the bathroom garbage...shouldn't have been any medicines or poisons in there)...The next day he is quite slow to react to commands, has trouble walking (especially down stairs) and is 'groaning'....what advice might you have?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Marlene!  I would definitely suggest to call your veterinarian immediately.  Abdmonial x-rays will need to be done to ensure that there is not an intestinal obstruction.  It sounds as though your dog is feeling very badly and there has to be a reason for it.
There is also an ailment called "Bloat", that is usually seen in larger, barrel chested dogs, but can be seen in any dog.  This often happens when a dog eats too much and it concerns me because your dog is showing some symptoms (ie. the difficulty in getting around and "groaning").  There are two forms of "bloat"...Medicinal and Torged Intestinal.  The Medicinal form of "bloat" can be treated with IV fluids and anti-acids...the Torged Intestinal bloat is where the intestined literally twist, making surgical intervention the only option in treating.
I can't diagnose without seeing your pet, but I can tell you that an immediate vet visit is definitely in order.
Please let me know how it goes.
My sister has a Bichon...they are excellent dogs!  Give your baby tons of kisses for me!
