cat box training

Question
Hi Dr. Fry,
I have a kitten that ia 14 weeks old and we are still struggling with him and the "potty"! He and his sister were born in my closet and have had exactly the same experiences, but she went right away in any and all boxes, but he is still hitting and missing...more of the latter. At first he wanted nothing to do with any litter box, little, big, deep, shallow, it didn't even matter what was in it. I read about some training, so I put plastic on the areas he went to before ( i put nature's miracle first), and tried getting him comfortable with the box. We played around it etc. he got treats, and eventually he used it, but now it is on and off. He rarely seemed to urinate in the box though...I have had MANY cats, but never this problem. We have another male that he hangs out with so I was hoping that he would watch and learn, but he doesn't seem to think he has to do what the big boy cat does. Actually, we have 3 girl cats besides the boys and they all go where they are supposed to. He watches and smells, but then goes on his way...next to a wall. I have not punished him or tried to make too big of a deal. I am trying to use a loving positive form of reward. Please let me know if you have ANY advice. Thanks for your time.

Answer
I would recommend trying CAT ATTRACT LITTER (www.preciouscat.com) as this often helps problem cats.  In addition, you should have one MORE box than the number of cats in the house and scoop the waste DAILY.  Continue to reward him with a special treat when he uses the litter box.  Make sure the food and water dishes are FAR AWAY from the litter boxes.  If you catch him in the act of going outside the box, squirt him with a water bottle.  I would also try a covered litter box.
