QuestionMy Jack Russell has had two operations to remove crystals. (he is 8 yrs old.) My vets are telling me that he has both struvite and oxilite(sp??) crystals so we have been giving him Hill's UD for 2 months, then CD for 2 months. Urine still showed crystals, so Rocky was put on Hill's KD and both kinds showed up after using it for 6 wks. Now they have him on cans of UD. I hate the cans and cost is killing me. Any suggestions as I am tired of buying bags and cans that don't seem to be working and the little guy doesn't want an operation every two years! Thanks for any suggestions!
AnswerHi Barbara, I sure do understand the crystal problem with your Jack Russell. Sorry, but it seems to be a common problem.

Answer
Hello - yes, here is a recipe to help - you can do the Hills and mix some of this home-made into the Hill's brand. JUST do 1/2 the hills and 1/2 home made.... See if, down the road, you can take him off the Hills brand. ( Just do home cooking)
I do have a few other recipes...but start with this one:
Bladder Stones (Struvite crystals)
Dietary Management for Struvite crystals
Beef and Rice Diet
1/2 pound very lean beef (raw or lightly cooked)
1 egg, large hard boiled
2 cups brown rice, long grained, cooked
1 tablespoon nutritional or brewers yeast (available at health food stores)
1 teaspoon bone meal
2 NuVET vitamins ( see link below) ( Needs 1 nuvet per day)
1 teaspoon Flax Oil
Supports the caloric needs of a 30 pound dog - 40.7 grams protein, 22 grams fat - about 800 calories..
NuVET vitamin supplements - a must when you do home cooking...
