Question
Hi, thanks for your info on travel to US with dogs: the health cert issued within 10 days of travel and a valid rabies vaccination and NO QUARANTINE - thats GREAT NEWS!!! My only concern now is that we plan to move early in the year and we are going from Sydney, AUS to Chicago, USA. As the animals are placed in the cargo hold, can you tell me the best months for air travel? We may consider another from of travel from LA to Chicago if the weather will be problematic.

Many Thanks,

Answer
I hope everyone else out there will read this !!!
Temperature restrictions have NOTHING to do with temp within the
cargo hold of the airplane.  NO  NO  NO
Temp restrictions ONLY have to do with OUTSIDE temps.
Anytime of year is OK to ship as far as cargo hold area is concerned...
Cargo area of plane ALWAYS has temp approx the same as passenger
cabin....  ALL cargo areas of planes where live animals are carried
are pressurized.  In spite of what one so called expert (?) says,
air travel for pets is VERY  VERY safe.  If there was ANY danger, we
pet shippers would NOT have a business... Nor, would airlines still be in business.....
The ONLY airlines that generally have temp restrictions are some of
the U.S. carriers.  Foreign carriers do not have these restrictions
United airlines will not carry pets if the outside temp in any of the
cities involved are below 45 F.  Northwest and Continental have NO
restrictions.  American and Delta will carry as long as a veterinarian has provided a letter of acclimation.
You could indeed have a problem using United to Chicago during our
winter months....
If you have access to: Lufthansa, KLM or British Air, I advise using
one of them via europe.  All have excellent animal facilities in their hub cities in europe, and all will then have direct flights to
Chicago.
You may be forced to use a pet shipper in Australia.  Try on your
own first.  You can visit:  www.ipata.com for pet shippers in AUS
You can consider: Qantas, United or others to LAX.  But, then very
possibly would need to transfer to NW, CO or AA to Chicago.  This
will cause many logistical problems and more expense, so, try to
stay with one airline only all the way.....
