Question
QUESTION: I am leaving New Delhi, India on the 28th of this month to go back home to U.S. and wanted to know if I'm too late to process the necessary paperwork to bring a puppy back home with me when I leave?  This is providing the Vet paperwork has been completed.  I can spend a full day doing what I need to do but wasn't sure if the paperwork is immediately approved?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Entry into USA is very easy.  Health cert issued within 10 days of travel.  Does NOT require any
thing more from Indian authorities.  Just the h.c. from your vet.  I am not sure if India requires an exit permit.  Very few countries do......
If the dog is over 4 mos old, needs to have a rabies vac which should be at least 30 days old at
time of travel.  However, USA is VERY flexible.  They will still allow dog into USA with a
promise from you to keep the dog home and under some control for the remainder of the 30 days.
If under 4 mos of age, dog can still enter USA with no problems.  You may need to sign a cert of
confinement at customs office, promising to secure a rabies vac at the appropriate time.
What airline are you flying with?  What is your final destination?

QUESTION: Hi Jerry,

I'm taking tomorrow off to visit a well-known vet near my hotel.  I am flying business through Contintental Airlines and tried calling them, but there was a major language barrier.  I've got an employee of mine here in India to reach out to see what all I need to do and also inquire on the additional cost.  My home is in Roanoke VA.  Unfortunately I have 2 lay-overs when I reach the states.  One in Newark and the other in DC.  I read that live cargo can be sent directly from IN to ROA but I need clarification from the airlines if that's even true.  Thanks for your response.  If this is successful I'll let you know so you can share!

Answer
Don't even think about trying to ship a live animal from Delhi to Roanoke.  He'd probably never
show up.
CO is quite expensive.  You might want to think about shipping the dog on Lufthansa, KLM or Brit
Air via their hub in Europe then onward to Dulles where I am.  Only one connection, and would
receive very good care.  My charge to pickup, clear customs and deliver to Roanoke would be $500
If you do bring him as far as Wash DC on CO, what would your plans from there on be? Rent a car?
No practical way to ship to ROA from here.
