Question
I'm moving to Turkey from the Uk with 2 cats but have been reading that I can only take one, is that correct? If so, is there still a way that will make it possible for me to bring the 2 cats into Turkey?

Answer
Hi Karine,

Thank you for your email.  To answer your question you will have to go directly to the embassey for the country you plan to travel to.  In this case you need to contact the Turkish embassey directly and ask them what their laws , rules and regulations are on importing domestic pets from the UK.

The questions you need to ask include:

1. What are the health requirements?
2. What documents need to be completed?
3. How far in advanced do you need to start preparing to bring your animals to Turkey?
4. Do they have limits to the number of domestic pets a person can bring to Turkey?
5. Is there a quarantine for entering pets?  - cats in particular?
6. If there is a quarantine, ask them if they have a direct release program and what requirements you'd need to meet in order to have your cats released directly into your care once you are in Turkey.
7. Who would be in charge of inspecting your pets to make sure they are approved for direct release in Turkey - ask for the phone number to the head of the department that will be doing the inspection - this could be customs or it could be the country agriculture department, or another branch of the government - but make sure to get a person's name and a phone number so you can talk directly to them

Important - as you go through the process, make sure you take names, numbers, and document everything. If you can get them to send you all this inforamtion via email carry it with you when you enter Turkey so you have a paper trail showing you have done all the right things and everything you were told to do to import your pets into Turkey.

Each country has different rules, regulations and laws, and in some cases they may restrict the number of pets someone can bring into their country.  It's important to contact that country directly and found out for sure what their regulations are.  Also keep in mind sometimes rules change so make sure to check back before you depart to make sure you're still in compliance with all regulations.
