Transporting my dog to India from USA

Question
QUESTION: Hi, We are moving to India on June 3 and received a quote to move our dog (75 pounds mixed breed) for $5500. We are flying from Houston, TX to BLR. Could you please help us figure out what we need to do to do this ourselves (Please include what meds to give the pet, what to put in crate, hydration, paperwork and what to expect as we transit through FRA? Thanks!

ANSWER: Dear Matthew
Yes, that quote of $5500 is totally obscene.  Totally criminal.
I'll be it was from PetRelocation in Austin ???  Please let me know.
The best way would be to take dog with you as excess baggage.  You
would get the info from the passenger reservation people at the
airline you travel on.  What airline are you on?
Your best bet would be Air France or Lufthansa.  British Air would
require the dog travel as cargo ONLY thru UK
If the dog must go as cargo, I recommend AF or LH
As Ex Bag your cost could be around $600 give or take.  As cargo
certainly under $2000    Much depends upon size of shipping kennel
required.
India has some strange entry requirements.  Contact the following
firm for this info:  They seem to have two websites
www.fuzzywuzzy.in     and    www.yashbans.com
Will need aphis 7001 international health cert issued within 10 days
of travel and endorsed by usda. Also, rabies vac at least 30 days
old and less than one yr.
If you need further help from a pet shipper let me know and I will
recommend one to you in Houston
Please let me know how this works out
Stay away from 3rd party pet shippers.....

QUESTION: Hi Jerry, Thanks for the quick reply. Could you please give us the contact info for that pet shipper in Houston? Would using them require us to travel on the same plane as our dog? (We have tickets booked on Continental to Bombay/Mumbai nonstop and are then taking a local airline to BLR). Are they cheaper?

Answer
You have complicated this by using CO to Mumbai.   The local carrier
to BLR may not take pets, especially larger ones.  Don't know if any
one here can answer this.  Did you try CO?
CO will have only one price, if dog travels as ex bag, or as cargo
You would have done so much better on AF or LH
Contact: Jane Edwards at BKS pet Shipping, 713.466.1378
You still didn't tel me who quoted $5500
Also, contact the firm in India.  They should be able to address
the issue of the carrier from Mumbai to BLR
Regards, Jerry

Sorry you just gave me a 9 for knowledge.....
At least I did NOT BS you along.  I directed you to exactly where you
needed to go for good info based upon the info you had provided me
in the first place.  Had I had the info you provided in the second
email to me I could have zeroed in much better.
Good luck
Jerry
p.s.  The very first email you say you are going thru FRA.  Now
you say it is non-stop from Houston to Mubai.  This is getting more
confusing for me.....
Do NOT sedate the dog.  No food for several hours before travel and
no food during travel.  Water ok.  Dog would have received excellent
care during stop over in FRA or CDG.  The long non-stop on CO, I just
do not recommend.  Jane can best advise you on this
