gravel or substrate..for saltwater tank.

Question
I have read in a couple of articles about using gravel for the bed of a salt water tank when using power filters.. I am planning on setting up a 90 to 125 gallon tank. I will be using 2 Power filters that are rated for 500 gallons per hour each. This is a first attemp at saltwater. I have done fresh water tanks in the past.

Can I use gravel?, or maybe a mixture? I am a little confused on this part of the setup and don't want to make a mistake.

Thanks,

Mike

Answer
Mike,
As long as the substrate is salt water safe then it doesn't really matter what you use.  Most crushed coral, sands, shells, aragonites, etc are fine.  Generally you want to use about a pound per gallon of water which gives you about an inch of substrate depth.

Do not use freshwater aquarium gravel.

Best of luck with your tank.
