Live rock and sand tuning green

Question
I recently set up a 75gal saltwater aquarium,I started it out with about a 2" base of live sand and 25# of live rock after about 5 weeks i had the water checked and added 3 fish (blue damsels)as well as 25 more pounds of live rock. some of the live sand has started to turn green as well as some of the  live rock i placed in at first. the second batch of live rock is starting to turn white too. I have crushed rock in my filter, and no protein skimmer, the levels in the water have been ok and my fish are still alive, they have only been in there a week. I'm not sure what is supposed to happen and have not been able to get any straight answers anywere. I did have some red hair like algae on some of the rock but seem to have gotten rid of it since putting a 50/50 lamp.

Answer
Hello Emilio,

For your info... whenyou add rock or sand or even change the rock around, (re-aquascape) you are stirring up things and changing things, that will take time to settle back down.  (come folks call this 'cycling', but really it is a description of what is going on.  the tank parameters are going up and down, LIKE A CYCLE

Try not to add or make changes when you add fish or corals... if you must add more rock, go ahead, but wait a while then add the fish...

Also, good luck with the damsels.  Everyone gets them at first, cause they are inexpensive and if they die, it isnt a big loss???  (fess up, is that why you got the damsels??)

BUT, those fish are nasty.. they are bossy, and will become everyones headace later on...

As for the 'green alage'??? I am guess that is what you got... Algae comes in all colors, and green is quite common...

The addition of the 50/50 light may have helped with your red algae, but that maybe cause you have 'decreased' the amount of light your tank is geting...

Adding colors to the bulbs is like putting sunglasses, it makes everything clearer and colored but it isnt as bright.  (PAR)

This will be a problem for you later on when yo uwant to add corals...

Can you please detail what the parameters of your tank are, and also tell me how and when you do 'top off' and when and how much you do water changes???

Thanks
