Corals???

rock Hey Glenn, I had a questions for you that hopefully you could help me out on. I've attached two images, the first one is a pic of a piece of live rock I purchased from another person. There were corals growing in his tank but this little rock had nothing on it when I got it, I've had it for about a week and I noticed little purple things growing on it, I was just wondering if these were some kinds of corals or something else. Thanks

Did you quarantine the rock?
Those could be a species of coral, but I believe it's a poriferan or sponge. You dont mention the species of corals that the rock was previously shacked up with, so it's hard to tell( and I cant zoom the picture). Either way it's more than likely that it's completely harmless. I would do a image search on poriferans and sponges. It will probably give you what you are looking for or at the very least point you in the right direction. If you have nitrate levels above 20ppm you can often get several species sponge that begin to grow. Just keep an eye on it and enjoy.
