Pump/filter

Question
We are setting up a 125gal. saltwater tank and the tank comes with an overflow box.  What kind of filter/pump system would be the best? Do I need a sump? the tank will be mostly reef and coral, very few fish.  Any advice would be great, we've previously had a tank that we converted from freshwater to saltwater, but want to set everything up right this time around. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

Regarding setting up your filtration system for your 125 gallon saltwater coral reef aquarium:

I recommend to use a sump, also called wet / dry filter in conjunction with a quality protein skimmer. Filter media that can be used inside your sump can include but not limited to: carbon, bio-balls, live rock, and phosban. See the following link below of a good quality sump wet / dry filter. http://www.ocreef.com/cpr_cr1000_wetdry_filter_wetdry_only

The major benefit of a sump wet / dry filter is that it provides areas for custom expansion of mechanical and chemical filtration, rendering it excellent at processing toxic ammonia and nitrite.

Regarding a couple good water pumps to use on your sump filter: the Maxi-Jet 5500 Pumps and Danner Mag pumps are good ones, they're durable and quiet.  Also, you'll want a few smaller powerhead pumps to provide water moment throughout your aquarium.

I wish you success in setting up your new aquarium.

Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,
David
