Thinking of setting a Salt Water Tank

Question
I have a 30 gallon tank with Marineland Eclipse Aquarium lighting and filtration system Eclipse 3. I also have the heater and gravel. What else do I need before going from fresh to salt water? Is it even big enough for salt water fish?

Answer
Hi,

Yes it is big enough, to house a couple small saltwater fish species, for example a goby.

It would be better to use crushed coral substrate and/or live sand, versus gravel.

Other potential items you will need:

Filtered Sea Water or Synthetic Sea Salt Mix used with reverse osmosis freshwater to make saltwater.

A Hydrometer -  which is an instrument used to measure the specific gravity (or relative density) of a liquid. In your case you would be using it to measure salinity in your water.

A good beneficial starter bacteria.

An Aquarium Grounding Probe/Rod -  Don't take a chance on having stray voltage in your aquarium.

A GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) Home Ground Outlet Plug -  All aquarist, when working in or around water should use a Shock Buster GFCI, no matter how big or small there aquarium is.

I wish you luck with all your saltwater aquarium endeavors!

Best Regards,
Dave
