White Build Up

Question
I have had my tank up and running since about October 8th, it has cycled through and all that good stuff, I have a false percula clown, and two camel shrimp in my tank that are all doing very well. But there seems to be a white film on the inside of the tank ocassionally I can remove some of it with my algae pad on a stick. But some of it just doesn't come off with that, is there anyway to take care of this without having to screw up my entire tank. It's really an eye sore. I recently put some live rock in and got lighting that will support basic coral.

If I get Turbo snails to take care of the algae would they get rid of this white residue as well?

Answer
Hey Krista

Do you know what coraline is? its the bright purple "concrete" like stuff that grows on the glass and everything in saltwater tanks. if youve had coraline in your tank, it might be dying off and leaving the hard to scrape off white deposits. how are your calcium levels? to get the coraline to rebound, keep your calcium in check.

coraline is hard to get rid of, and some sea urchins will eat it. other than that, all you can do is scrape it. a trick after you get rid of all the built up stuff is to scrape the glass of your tank every 1-2 days, that way it doesnt have a chance to grow back

good luck!
