Question
I have a question, I have a house filtration system that I put salt in. I have purchased a new tank and have noticed that even though I put the exact amount to salt water, the hydrometer states its too high. Can you please verify 1. Could I use the water from my house and add the water cleaner. 2. Are the Salinity levels high because of the water I am using? Thank you in advance! : )

Answer
Hello Salvador, (sorry for the delay in answering your questions)

It is not best to use 'tap' water to mix for saltwater, or to use that water for 'top off' (to replace the evaporated water).

The tap water is full of contaminents that may not be removed with the house filtration system.  (can you measure the water to determine it's TDS?  (those meters are relative cheap)

Some house filtrations actually have water 'softeners', that will definately increase the salt levels in the water.

I would also reccomend you double check your hydrometer.  Try comparing it to some of your friends or to the local fish store.  If you are consistantly higher then your friends and others, then your salt levels are actually lower then you think.

(and visa versa)

This will also have an affect on the calcium and other trace elements that are directly proportional to the salinity.

hope this helps,
