Your question was

"Hi, I am setting up a new 70 gallon salt water tank that will hold seahorses. I have only dealt with crushed coral in the past, and I am just wondering what the pros and cons of having a sand bottom are.
Also, I do you think using a 30 gallon tank is too big to grow copepods? And when I do grow them, does it make a difference if I use sand or crushed coral in the bottom?
Thanks!

Mitch"

Answer
Hi Mitch,

Use crushed coral.  It will provide pods more room to hide and burrow.  This is something they like to do.

No I think a 30 is fine.

I would use sand.  Sand is finer.  It is going to provide a better, softer landscape for the horses.  Cons would be if you don't use sand made for saltwater.  If you try pool sand or river sand, you are looking for trouble...they contain metals.

Happy fish-keeping. :)
