worried about our marine fish

Question
Hello Bill I'm just wondering if you could help us with something? We have lost 6 or 7 fish in the last 3 month's but found out what that problem was but recently we have lost 3 more. They were all eating fine the night before and were still fine when we checked on them before we went to bed, the morning after they were dead their colour's were vibrant,we took our water to be tested and everything was fine but it came to light that my partner had been cleaning the tank with window cleaner. Since then he has stopped using that but we are still smoking in the living room where the tank is. Could smoking in the living room still be poisoning them? They all seem to be fine but we're just really worried that it may affect the one's we have left. Please get back to us ASAP  Thank you

Answer
Hello Amy,

Windo cleaner should have showed up in water quality tests... (AMMONIA is usually the problem)

But, as far as smoking, that shouldnt be a big problem... Usually smokers have an open window or two, which will allow fresh air inside... the issue being more of a pH issue...

If you dont have fresh air, your pH will drop, and the tank will become more 'acidic', not that it would be ACID, just slightly too acidic for healthy fish and critters

How long has it been since you changed your ways as fars as the window cleaner???

What else are you doing?  How are you maintaining the tank?  What water are you using?  What filter are you using??? etc
