Question
What are the red/orange worms with spines on the sides?  they are small, maybe under and inch or so.  they live in my live rock and have eaten my horseshoe crab.  what exactly are these worms?  and how do you suggest to getting rid of them.  the man at my local aquarium store referred to them as spiral worms.

Answer
Hello Angela,

I am thinking they are 'bristle worms'  Try looking them up and getting a picture.

they are usually red/pink and dark, almost 'two-toned'.

These are not harmful and are usually a sign you are doing something right, and that your tank is doing well.

To control thier growth, is like all things, limit thier food.  They will eat left over food and dead and dieing critters.

If you see something dead, take it out.  Feed less, and feed less often.

If you see a bristle worm, take it out, (not with your fingers), The other name for these worms is 'fireworm'.  (figure it out, hehehehe)

I have some, ok, I have a lot in my tank... the largest i have seen in my tank is about 10".

They usually come out when i feed or just after lights out and moonlights on...

Good luck, and let me know if the pictures you find are similar to what you have in your tank.
