Grey/black algae

My first attempt at saltwater tank.  I started my tank end of February 2009.  I have a grey/black algae all over my live sand.  I can stir up the sand and it disappears for a few hours, but by the end of next day it is again heavily covering the sand.  What can I do?

Can you please tell me a bit about your tank, what type of equipment, filters, powerheads, lights, etc.

ALso a bit about the water quality and water conditions.

You really shouldnt 'stir' up the sand, but if you do, you should suck out / syphon out as much dirty water as possible.
