Question
1st of all i just wanted to say that i have found alot of useful answers on your website and i very much appreciate it. I found many answers on how to deal with my brown algea problem but i still have a few more questions. Is brown algea harmful to my tank or to anything in my tank and i have build up on my dead rock is that bad and will that also go away?

Answer
Hi Jeremy,

Brown Algae is not harmful to your aquarium, other than not being aesthetically pleasing. There are other species of algae for example hair algae sp. that if left untreated, can eventually grow out of control and start to cover over corals blocking light from getting to them.

Brown Algae is typically found in newer saltwater aquariums with high silicate concentrations. If you did absolutely nothing to your tank, the Brown Algae would eventually consume the silicates present, and eventually start to die off from starvation.

May I recommend to also get a few snails and hermit crabs. They will also help to consume brown algae.

Best Regards,
Dave
