Filtertration systems for a saltwater tank

Question
I would like to know everything that I need to start a salt water tank that is not fish only. I have a 120 gallon aquarium. What filtertration system do we need? What I really want to know is exactly what do I need to buy day one to start the saltwater tank cycling? Thank You, Lori

Answer
Hey Lori

Your best filtration is live rock, and in a proper saltwater tank its the only filter you need. for your 120g, i would get 100lbs-250lbs of live rock. Otherwise, all you will need are some powerheads and a protein skimmer

To get the tank cycling day 1, you need some powerheads, the skimmer, substrate, live rock, and mixed saltwater. if its cured live rock, wait a few days then test the water, you can add a small fish. if you buy uncured live rock, you will have to leave it in the tank for a month with no livestock for it to cure.

always remember, take it slow and have fun!
