Question
Hi, I have a 55 gallon FOWLR tank and started about 2 weeks ago, after 1 week with the live rock, we've put in a few fish and after a few days there are signs of algae in the tank and at the same time the salinity level dropped, can you help explain why the sudden drop ? and should I bring it up by doing a small water change ? Thanks.

Answer
Hello lilian,

Can you please tell me what your salinity is currently?  And what salinity did you target when you set up the tank.

It is quite normal for new tanks to grow algae during the 'cycling' process...

What is not normal is to pput fish into a tank prior to the cycling being completed.

Please send me all the tank perameters you test for currently.  hopefully   AMMONIA/NITRITE/NITRATE/pH and Salinity

Also let me know what equipment you have on your system, along with the types of maintenance you do regarding 'WATER CHANGES and WATER TOP-OFF'

Also, can you please tell me how or where you get your salt water from?  do you mix it yourself? and if so, how do you mix it, and when?  i.e. do you mix it, test it, and use it, or do you mix it, test it, and let it set until you are ready to use it later on?

I look forward to hearing from you with more information.
