Question
what kind of algae in a fish only with live rock setup is good and bad? I have Live
rock and live sand, and my tank is just over two weeks old. I just noticed the live
rock is now covered with a brownish looking algae and the sand also seems to
have brownish algae on the top part. I currently have two percula clownfish and
a peppermint shrimp. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Sheldon. The algae you are seeing is what is known as a diatom bloom. This form of algae usually grows in a newly set up aquarium and is harmless. Normally it will clear up on its own within two weeks after it starts and you won't see it again. I know it looks bad and there are a few things you can do to help clear it up faster. Use of a powerhead and strong water flow help to keep the diatoms from adhering on surfaces and a simple running of your fingers through the gravel to stir it up a little to be captured by your filter on a daily basis will help keep your tank clean looking. Don't be alarmed it is completely normal to see this kind of algae in the first few weeks!
