Lionfish Poisoning Water

Question
A montha go my lionfish died. My stats on my water were all within normal limits  and still are. The lionfish was our only fish. I have livesand and 3 live rocks. Since the fish died, I have not added anything for 2 months. The rocks are developing hair algae, so I purchased a serpentine star and 3 crabs. After putting them in the tank, the star immediately lost all legs and all died within 5 minutes. Stats are still fine and temp is at 74-76 degrees. The lionfish died from difficulty digesting. When we found him he had all of his spines exposed, like the skin was peeled off of him. Could the stress and exposed spines cause our water to be tainted or poisoned? Does it release poison into the water.
