wet dry systems makingn lots of noise

Question
QUESTION: Jihad this system for several years with no problems.recently it's started what i call burping, the water flows smoothly for about 30 seconds through the pre filter box and then seems to build up speed and makes this loud noise. I've cleaned and taken everything apart and put the wet dry back together with no luck.

ANSWER: Hello Mike,

First off, i had to do a 'double take' at your message.  The first word threw me for a loop?  Funny how one letter can make all the difference in the world. hehehehehehe

As for the wet dry system you have, i would like more information or maybe a picture of it to hopefully understand better.

IT sound like there might be a tube/pipe that is discharging water, and that pipe is below the water line.

People will sometimes do this to minimize the splashing noise from the water splashing onto the surface of the water, and put the pipe/tube under the water.

This will increase the pressure needed for the water to be released/exit the pipe, and might cause gas/air to build up inbetween.

(think of a bottle with water that is held upside down and the water rushes out, then stops/slows then rushes out, while the gas goes back into the bottle)

Please look at the filter system to see if this is the case, if not, please try to describe or attach a photo to let me look at your filter and understand how yours works, (there are so many different wet dry filters sold, and then there are more that are made by do-it-yourselfers..

Thanks

QUESTION: Sorry for the misplaced J i don't typed very well. My daughter tired to send pictures, but couldn't figure out how to send. My system has 2 filter boxes on top of the tank, one inside and one outside with a overflow   tube between them. There is a sponge on the outside box. A hose from the outside filter box runs under the tank to a holding area where it is filtered again and a pump pushes it back into the tank. I've ordered a new sponge and a larger tube. Hope this makes sense.

ANSWER: Hello Mike,

no problems for the typo, I make more then anything I have ever seen or recieved.

Your description is perfect!!!  Thanks

The device on your tank, is called a HOT overflow device.  (HOT=hang on tank)

It and the U-tube are vital to making sure your tank does not overflow onto the floor.  (if you replace the U-tube, make sure you set it up right)  Although i am not sure why you are replacing that TUBE.  it should be fine.

You dont need to replace the sponges too often, but if it has been a while, go ahead.  I reccomend changing them (throwing them away after a year)

But, i suggest having extras so you can swap them out every month, (no longer then once a month).  When you take the old one out, rinse it is hot water, with a couple drops of bleach.  Rinse well, and let dry, and use it next , month.  Changing / cleaning the sponges is very important to keep nitrates down.

PLEASE tell me where the noise is coming from.  From the over flow device on the tank, or where teh water is coming into the filter , or where in the filter the noise is.  (in the pipe?)

Thanks

QUESTION: Thanks for trying to help. I had the guy that sold me the tank several years ago and for 100.00 got it fixed. For some reason the flow of water was too much as the tank aged, about 6 years old. He put a back flow device on the pump. The flow of water is much slower and their is no noise. I have fresh water in the tank and he said the flow was fine. I also have a Emperor 280 to help. Thanks again.

Answer
I thought i just answered this, but i guess it didnt go thru??

I am glad you got it fixed, but sorry you had to spend so much money doing it.

BUT, i doubt i would have come up with that solution myself, at least not yet anyways.

Good job.
