Question
Hello i have had a saltwater tank for alittle over a mouth now, and now im starting to see piles of red/pink stuff on the bottom of the tank now it seems to be covering with mold i think?  What could this be?  I only have 2 clowns and a coral beauty in a 46 gallon tank oh and 3 peppermint shrimp. Please help if you can thanks.

Answer
Hi Kristy,
Sounds like cyanobacteria. Without pictures its hard to be 100% accurate. Does it have a velvety look to it? Its an indication of elevated nitrates(or organics) in the water or a lighting issue. Did you test your water? How long do you run your photo period? I would manually clean out as much as possible with the substrate vac, reduce the amount of food at each feeding and reduce the photo period to only 7 or 8 hours for a couple of weeks. That will get it under control. Let me know if you have more questions and how it goes!
