Strange Worms

Question
Hello,
We've had our reef tank set up for over a year now and lately I've been noticing small tentacles sticking out of rocks, and now they seem to be living in the sand. A recent death of a crab had them out and all over the body. The tentacles are orange with purple dots that seem to line the entire tentacle. Should I be looking for a fish to eat them, or keep them in check? Thank you

Answer
Hi Nina,

Good Question:

Regarding the worms you are seeing, they are a natural part of your marine tanks ecosystem, and pose no threat to your fish, corals or other invertebrates. Note: there is a couple more larger species of marine worms that can pose a threat to live corals, however they are rarely seen in the hobby. You would definitely notice these larger worms if you had them, especially at night when they would come out to feed.

However I believe the particular smaller worms that you described are common bristle worms, which can vary in color including a range of orange, red, brown, and yellow with purple to blue spots.

Your aquarium lights will also play a role in how colorful they appear to you. For example blue moonlight LED's can really make these worms glow in vibrant iridescent looking colors.

I wish you luck with all your saltwater aquarium endeavors!

Regards,
Dave
