Film on fishes eye

Question
Hi

Please excuse the simplicity of the question. We have had our freashwater tank - 30 litres - for approx 6 weeks. We have 3 fish so far. We change a third of the water twice weekly, feed them once every other day. So far, apart from slight water cloudiness, everything has been fine. Until today. One of our fish is lying at the bottom of the tank, slightly to the side, with a silver film on one eye. Dont know the species, but its a small orange breed, with big boggle black eyes. Today we have changed half the water, and poured in sachets of Stress Zyme treatment and Stress Coat.

Please advise our next move.

Many thanks

Answer
Hello!

First of all I would like to suggest not changing so much water weekly, change only about 10% and 25% after a bout of disease has passed. Overchanging water can lead to cloudiness and loss of beneficial bacteria, possibly causing disease.

A silver film on one eye is probably a fungal disease, I recommend Pimafix (I believe that is the name). You can also visit your local fish store and get many other medicines labelled to treat eye cloudiness and/or fungus. Pimafix is the best, I find it works but it may not be strong enough if the fish is seriously ill, but give it a chance of a week or so to work.

I hope this helps, if you find any other symptoms, please feel free to write back as he could have more disease then one.
