Pregnant catfish?

25 9:09:49

Question
I'm pretty sure she is in good health! All of the other fish seem to be doing well too.  So neither the mother nor the father, or any other fish, won't try to eat the babies or eggs?  Some people say to separate the babies from the other fish.  Were you able to make any guesses as to which breed of catfish it is?

Question -
I am not sure which kind of catfish I have.  I have two of them.  They are over 2 inches long, mostly black with white stripes, and black whiskers.  I think one of them is pregnant.  The bottom of her looks like a large gray half circle where she lays on.  It is about the size of a quarter.  What should I do if she is pregnant?  I just noticed the largening of this area a week ago.

Answer -
Hi Lisa,
Thank you for your letter. If the catfish is pregnant, there's little you need to do. Just let nature take its course.
However, there is a possibilty that the fish is bloated. You will know soon. If the fish's health deterioriates, you might have a water pollution problem. Some of the symptoms are over feeding (more than a couple of flakes per fish per day), cloudy or viscous water, darting, floating near the top or bottom, floating sideways, bumps or discoleration of the fish's silky coating.
If you suspect disease, follow the "emergency care" instructions at the bottom of this page:

All for now, write back if you want to discuss further,

Answer
Hi Lisa,
That sounds good. I think people do separate them. Keep researching, because you are way ahead of me. The people at your local aquarium supply shop are usually pretty helpful.
For the species, try putting catfish and other keywords into the images feature at Google:

That's all I can think of. Wish I knew more about it.
