newborn jewel cichlids

Question
Hello, I was just feeding my jewels and realised there was a whole lot of babies being protected by mummy & daddy. I wasn't trying to breed them so I have no idea what to do. The babies are about 3mm long and are sharing the tank with 3 jewels (inc. parents), 1 zebra, two electric yellows, 1 (unknown) long orange cichlid who tends to be aggresive, and 1 sucker fish (also unknown, not aggresive)which we feed flakes twice a day. Any information on care for our newborns will be great, seeing as we have no idea where to start. For now do we need to separate them (with or without parents) and how? Also, how and what should we feed them? Thanks, Caitlin.

Answer
Hi Caitlin, Congrats on the babies!
From what I know I've heard that you should never remove -all- the fry from the parent Jewel Cichlids as it will make the pair -very- aggressive towards one another so its best to leave them be. Jewels, like most cichlids, are usually decent parents. You should separate the babies once they reach about 1/2 inch if you plan to raise them to adults but like it warns, leave some fry in the tank with them to prevent aggression.

Here is a good article on what to feed cichlid fry--

I hope this helps and best of luck!
