snails in freshwater tanks

Can my son place snails that he has found at the river into our freshwater tank with community fish?

Technically you can have snails in most community freshwater tanks - putting snails in with something like puffers or cichlids will result in an impromptu feeding of escargot. That said, i wouldn't put snails you found from an untested source into your tank - they may carry parasites / disease which would compromise the health and stability of your tank.
